Pre Tanning Treatment
All hair removal treatments, waxing, shaving or depilatory creams should be carried out at least 24 hours prior to your spray on tan application so that the natural oils within your skin are restored for optimum tanning results.
On the day of your appointment, you will need to exfoliate your skin using gloves, exfoliating shower cloth or a non-oil granule based scrub (Exfoliation is vital in preparing the outermost cells of the skin to not be more receptive to the spray tan solution and to ensure your spray tan will fade evenly).
Before your spray tan appointment, you will need to come with a fresh skin with no moisturiser, deodorant, perfume or makeup as these will hinder the results of your tan. (We recommend having a shower just before your appointment).
When preparing what to wear for your spray tan we recommend a pair of thongs or flats and loose dark clothing (snug fitting clothes will hinder your results and can cause a streaky tan).
During your tan treatment
Let your therapist know if you are allergic to any products if they aren’t already aware.
Your therapist will leave you to get changed and will explain how the tanning appointment will work. Tanning appointments normally take no longer than 15 minutes.
Post Tanning Treatment
Avoid showering, bathing, sweating, makeup, deodorant, moisturiser, exercise etc for 1-2 hours (this will depend what tan is used. Your therapist will let you know on the day) following your spray tan application as the tan requires the full time to develop. When you have a shower after your waiting period, keep the water cool and wash the tan off gently with the water and your hands (This is very important! Failure to wash off all the tan correctly will result in a streaky tan) Once showered, your tan may look lighter than expected; it will continue to develop darker over the next 6 hours after showering until full colour is reached. After your shower, you can resume your normal beauty regime.
Prolonging your tan
Spray Tans normally last anywhere from 5-7 days depending how you look after them. Follow The Skin Coaches handy tips to prolong your tan!
- After each shower, pat your skin dry with your towel rather than rubbing, as rubbing in itself is a mild form of exfoliation, which will prematurely fade the tan.
- Once dry, it is imperative that you moisturise every day throughout the duration of your tan (especially in our dry climate) in order to maintain the tan’s depth of colour and prolong its longevity
- Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools, excessive exercise, soaking in Jacuzzis or sweating in saunas, as these can all fade the tan prematurely
